Nathaniel Goodwin papers, 1796-ca. 1856.

A collection of correspondence, drafts, and notes penned by Nathaniel Goodwin of Hartford, Connecticut, in preparation for the publication of "Genealogical Notes, or Contributions to the Family History of some of the First Settlers of Connecticut and Massachusetts". Also includes several letters from his guardian Ebenezer Barnard, an 1833 letter naming Goodwin as deputy surveyor of Hartford, and several writings by Charles Hoadley. Families that Goodwin was researching included Chester, Clark, Devotion, Gurley, Ingersoll, Kent, Mather, Morton, Porter, Smith, Spencer, Whiting and Worthington. Goodwin was a civil servant, surveyor, historian and genealogist, at one time serving as Vice President of the New England Historic and Genealogical Society.
